I can’t tell about locals, but for foreigners I’m not 100% sure this “hints” help at all. I kept looking at both sides carefully every time. Their driving on the left lane doesn’t help to this confussion. By the way, they drive on the left but still ask you to stay on the right in the escalators just like everywhere else in the world. Oh well, that’s it, locals do need these hints 
I have always appreciated the use of words instead of symbols in all kinds of interfaces, for there is always a possibility for people to misunderstand a symbol, but not a clear textual statement. But… “Keep keep clear clear”? Sure sure. [End of post].
