Justice’s DVNO videoclip makes 80’s look coolCheck out the dozens of creative “movie production company logos” that make the words of the lyrics in an continuous energetic animation. It’s like the movie is never going to start and you’re fine with that. PS: Para residentes en España, sólo una palabra: “Mooooovie Reecord” [Via Cuchara Sonica] Typollution: animated typography (to Ratatat song)I remember watching this great typography animation years ago but I bumped into it again just searching for any video that featured Ratatat’s “Nostrand” to introduce this awesome music to a friend. [Thanks Ray] Draw straight lines with magic, no rulersSpanish-built Tecnilinea Pyramid Liner is a series of clever textured pads that allow you to draw either freehand lines or perfectly square straight lines… freehand. These templates have a small grid of 0.5 milimeter spaced lines through which you run your pen or pencil to make technical drawing almost fun, and certainly a lot faster. I can see potential for more advanced patterns through changing surfaces: perspectives, alignments… physical CAD! [Via Compradiccion] The names of colors and color palettesAs some of you know, I’m colorblind. A colorblind ex-graphic designer to be precise. I didn’t quit because of my problem identifying most colors —I now actually study car design which is way more critical when it comes to chosing colors— but I inevitably have to start any color composition by picking named colors off Corel Draw’s default palette. Even reading “Light Blue Green” on the status bar makes me feel confident it is indeed a light greenish blue or something like that. Picking colors from a photo or a website is another story, and I have to rely in the pseudoscience of RGB hexadecimal code to decode what a color might actually be. But today we have tools like Name That Color, a genial (free, open-source) web tool for everybody to check the actual real name of any color and thus the identity it’s been hiding, or select one of the 1500+ preset color names in order to get its RGB code (or just to see how the heck the color wisteria looks like). Also invaluable for many can be the several color palette generators that generate 5-20 colors based on any photograph, either a url or uploaded. For even more random inspiration, colourlovers.com has tons of custom palettes by users, but if you really want to combine colors yourself, you may want to read some advice. Now if only all the good brands of markers put actual names of colors on the labels, and not only the bad ones. Thomas Williams’ audiovisual dreamsIt took me a few moments to come up with the most accurate description for this guy’s work. Visible dreams: or a unique skill to create visuals that seem to belong in places like outer space, the subconscious, the nanoworld, etc. His latest creation, “Durian“, is also a success at syncronizing music with abstract animations that almost “show” the music: [Via Neatorama] Presentation Zen (things I’ve found in)Presentation Zen is a long-posts blog packed with tips for [Presentation Zen found via Colblindor] Flag Diagrams“Meet the World” campaign features several countries’ flags with a small caption describing which color zones correspond to which social group. The thing that made me get back to writing here Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been coming across really interesting stuff that evoqued the “let’s blog this” switch in my head. A change means a lot of changes, and since I’m moving to San Francisco soon (automotive design degree attempt!), why not revive good ol’ Avantglance bloggin’? If you appreciate/enjoy/ love the piece below, don’t miss this collection of “enhanced” flag designs that show off this kind of inspired Whatisthegoogle? t-shirtA T-shirt design of mine has been accepted in the tshirt.com competition I actually designed it last summer and printed it using crappy inkjet printing, transfer paper and my well-known ironing skills. But if you go and vote for it (you have to register first) they may do it all the professional way. Click on the image below to see a high-res version of it. If you don’t understand the whole concept/design idea, Houston you’ve got a problem. Hanging alarm clockA light thingy hanging from the ceiling just on top of your pillow featuring a “Snooze” function that makes you physically wake up When I first saw the photo I thought it gradually slid down and lightened up until it reached your head and a high level of annoyance, but it’s the other way round. “Sfera” actually turns on in the morning just on top of you, and when you switch it off with a smack, the snooze function starts raising the thing every time you smack it off… until you have to literally wake up to shut the sucker up. Militarism for funEthics and consequences aside, I’ve always liked the aesthetics of missiles, jets, rockets, tanks, etc. Yeah, of weapons. They can dance beautifully Please don’t anyone get too serious with this, it’s just about Colonel Blimp’s Plaid videoclip for Basement Jaxx’s song “Cish Cash”. Without rapping against Bush, they rise the topic stylishly in this monochrome video. Scene with jet fighters drawing syncrhonized vapour tails keeps my hair stand on end. Stand-alone Kitchen Block K2The smallest you could get for a kitchen block; in only one piece it includes all you need. You might not have space but you always need the basic kitchen utilities. This design, all in stainless-steel by Norbert Wangen for Boffi not only has a cool look, but also all you need for a basic cooking experience (oven/Microwave, dishwasher, sink, fridge) hidden below a surface that doubles as a table. And there’s still some place for a cupboard. No more excuses for pulling down the wall that divides your kitchen with your living room… gain some room for your friends and bring them in for dinner. I’ve been officially pimped!Or at least i’ve added a cute white stripe around my Seat Arosa all the Ford Gran Torino style [I just had to blog this]. I’ve been thinking about it for a year, doing sketches and photoshops, and it finally looks even nicer than I had imagined. It just works when you add stripes following the actual design lines of the car, instead of senseless tribals or flames that stick out like a sore thumb. If you live in Europe you know what I’m talking about. And yes, the Ford Gran Torino with the white stripe was the car of Starsky & Hutch. Click on more to see larger pictures of both cars. London graphic identitySome examples of what the city looks like graphic design-wise when you walk around (LONG POST) During the past unblogged week I spent some sightseeing time in London with my family, with no hackable WiFi in my hotel room. Very basic sightseeing which allowed me to get interested —and attracted— in all the public signs that build the city’s typo-graphic style. Your Concept Car5 women have designed a Volvo for women, and it’s more than just beautiful Apart from having invented some innovative design lines for the front and back optic groups (the part of the cars which receives less creative input since Audi revolutionized it with the A6) and in general having designed a very good looking machine, these women have included many new concepts and gadgets in the YCC to make their lifes (and ours) more comfortable. Check out the photos of the press release and a couple of videos.
New shapes for websitesLuis Camino (who would never write this article) has just designed the web page for KBS, an Interior Design company of two Madrid-based young designers (Monica Martinez-Andina & Soledad Noriega), showing that a simple or just calmed design with no “Extra Features” might not be old fashioned. ¶ Surfing the net you’ll generally find a lack of new ideas, shapes and points of view able to transmit the philosophy of the client without the need of a huge invesment in money or time developing extra-mega-super-dupper flash gadgets. Guggenheim in RioJean Nouvel has designed an incredible building for the new Guggenheim Museum in Rio The French architect Jean Nouvel showed in New York his magnificent design for the new Guggenheim Museum in Rio. Escaping from the typically “Nice Architecture” he revolves around conceptual architecture, submerging parts of the museum under the water, except the ceilings in order to get natural light. The first thing you see is a great aluminium wall that tells you: “forget about all the rest.” Upon entering the lobby of water ceilings you walk through the galleries, including a big space exclusively for multimedia art (Finally!). When you exit the multimedia art gallery, you enter into a rain forest, including a waterfall, and at the end there is a large tube of steel with a blurb structure on top working as a restaurant… seems is going to be incredible!! MegalomaniaI always find quite satisfying to find something I can beat a world record with It was one year ago when I wanted to design something in some way that it showed really really spectacularly big on people’s screens. The result is the biggest text ever written on the web
